The Ostholstein-Museum in Eutin presents the main topic „Eutin at the time of Goethe“. At this time around 1800 Eutin was an internationally known intellectual and cultural centre in the German-speaking area.
The intellectual life is presented with the works of three personalities: The headmaster, poet and translator Johann Heinrich Voß (living in Eutin from 1782 - 1802), the painter of Goethe, J.H. Wilhelm Tischbein (living in Eutin from 1808 - 1829), and the composer Carl-Maria von Weber, who was born in Eutin in 1786.On the first floor Eutin landscape paintings from the 19th and 20th century are shown. Exhibitions on the topics of “Weights and Measures” and “Protection against Fire” are presented there, too. The fire hose from 1848 is one of the earliest in Schleswig-Holstein. Furniture, Eutin silver and pewter as well as faïance items from Stockelsdorf round off the cultural history section. The museum regularly shows special exhibitions.
