The museum was opened in 1955. Since 1982 it is housed in the „Alte Apotheke“ (old pharmacy), a building from 1630 with a Classicistic façade. The museum is responsible for the district of Plön. There are collections on pre- and early history, city archaeology, traditional trades as well as guild paraphernalia (tin and silver tableware of the craft guilds and the Plön marksman guild), glass that was either produced or used in Schleswig-Holstein and local history. The dispensary of the “Plöner Hofapotheke” (Plön court pharmacy) and a documentation on the “Königlich-Preußische Kadettenanstalt” (Royal Prussian cadet school) belong to the central exhibits.
