Run by a keen museum association, the collection is housed provisionally in former warehouses in the centre of the old part of Kappeln. It comprises paintings and pictures of buildings and landscapes of the Schlei region, ship paintings as well as a number of model ships, half-models and dioramas. In addition, one of the largest regional collections of ships in bottles is presented. The maritime section is the highlight of the collection. It shows a dug-out canoe of the Middle Ages, a Schlei fishing boat, figureheads, nautical instruments and tools of seafaring and fishing. This fund fills not only the “seadogs” among the visitors with enthusiasm. “Landlubbers” find tools of trade and commerce, which document the town history in addition to archive material.
