The city gallery was founded as a forum for contemporary art in 1988. It shows outstanding positions on art in Schleswig-Holstein and Northern Germany, national and international art in individual or group exhibitions. In addition, there are exhibitions on 20th century art. Recent examples are the presentations of works by Raffael Rheinsberg, Georg Herold and Jan Henderikse or the exhibitions on new art from Norway, Finland and Italy. Works by the painter Heinrich Ehmsen are permanently exhibited. The foundation that was named after him is affiliated to the city gallery. Studio exhibitions regularly introduce works by new artists from the region.
