The 'Burgkloster' in Lübeck was founded in 1229. It is the most important medieval monastery in Northern Germany. After the reformation it was used as a poorhouse. Being rebuilt at the end of the 19th century it served as a courthouse and a prison. During the era of the 'Third Reich' the Burgkloster was a place of national socialist injustice because Jewish people and members of the Resistance movement were imprisoned here. In addition, the 'Christenprozeß' (trial of the Christians) took place here in 1943. Two cellar vaults as well as rooms in the ground floor have been preserved from the medieval cloister, which was inhabited by Dominican monks until the Reformation. As former enclosure buildings a chapter room, a summer and a winter refectory, a sacristy and three chapels of the monastery's church that was torn down in 1818/19 are adjoining the central cloister. Additionally, a house for confession and a room that probably was used as a hospital and that has a medieval heating system under the floor can be visited. After restoration by the Land Schleswig-Holstein the Burgkloster serves as a cultural centre with exhibitions, conferences, readings, music and theatre events. thematic focus: Art adults 5,00 € reduced fee 2,50 € (apprentices, students, persons doing military or civil service, holders of a Lübeck Card or a Senior Citizens Pass) children and teens up to 18 years 2,00 € children under 6 years free | |||||||
