On December 26th 1996 the first German Sea Life Centre opened at Timmendorfer Strand. The visitors follow the water cycle on their tour of the Centre. They experience the natural habitats in the Schleswig-Holstein stretches of water. They follow the streams and rivers, which feed the freshwater lakes and finally flow into the sea. Concerning the sea, the visitors first gets insight into coastal habitats like sandy beaches, harbours and cliff-lined coasts. They get to know the sea grass meadows of the Baltic and the North Sea coast. Finally as a highlight, they are led through the habitat of the open sea by an underwater tunnel.
In the shaping of the different areas like the freshwater landscape with a waterfall, the tunnel at the bottom of the ocean and the ball-shaped tanks in the sea grass meadow, modern Aquarium technology goes hand in hand with careful design. Our offer is completed by lectures and presentations that vividly convey valuable information on life under water.
