The zoological museum is one of the twelve exhibition facilities of Kiel University. It was designed by the architects Martin Gropius and Prof. Karl Möbius from Berlin as Zoological Institute and Museum. Today the building is a modern daylight museum. In a large hall the exhibition "From the whale to single-celled organisms" is presented. In its centre the skeleton of a not fully-grown blue whale is exhibited. A study exhibition shows European birds, which are arranged according to the scientific order. On the ground floor two changing exhibitions per year present ecological interrelations of a symbiosis or, if possible, results of recent research.
Collections: samples of different expeditions (e.g. "First plankton expedition 1889"), tropical bird skins of the "round-the-world-sailing-tour of the Galathea" from 1845-1849, collections of insects and molluscs – among them several butterfly collections from Schleswig-Holstein – as well as scientific comparative collections of beetles, dipterans and sawflies.
An example of an extinct great auk and a complete skeleton of an also extinct solitaire (dodo-like bird species) belong to the zoological treasures. | | | |
