With its 1,200 square metres of light-flooded exhibition space, Kiel city art gallery is situated in the city centre. Since it was founded in 1988 it mainly shows changing exhibitions on contemporary art. The main focus is on current artistic positions from Scandinavian and Baltic countries but also on national and regional contemporary art. Thematic exhibitions presenting works of international artists as well, complete the programme of changing exhibitions.
Kiel city art gallery emphasises its claim to participate in the international exhibition business by presenting exhibitions on up- and-coming young artists from, for instance, Italy, New Zealand, Japan or even the Antarctic. From painting over photography and video to sculpture and installations, the gallery predominantly shows works of the youngest generation of artists who is just on the verge of success. Regular guided tours and diverse special events complete the gallery's offer. In addition, Kiel city art gallery draws attention to artists who studied at Muthesius art college in Kiel. In the style of the Biennale there is an exhibition on the Gottfried Brockmann-price every two years which informs about the latest tendencies within the art scene in Kiel. Students of the Muthesius art college manage the co-operative gallery PRIMA KUNST on their own responsibility. It is located in a maritime container attached to the foyer of Kiel city art gallery. The spacious entrance area of Kiel city art gallery houses a café and the artothek (facility where you can borrow artworks for a fee for a certain period of time). |
