The building of the ‘Kunsthalle’ (Art Hall) from 1909 is situated North of the town centre behind the castle garden close to the ‘Kieler Förde’ (Kiel Firth). It has a stairwell from the 1950ies and an annexe from 1986, which is flooded with light. The ‘Schleswig-Holsteinische Kunstverein’ (Schleswig-Holstein art association) started the collection in 1854. It comprises paintings, sculptures, object art, photo and video works. Presented are art of the 19th century (paintings of the Romantic period and of the Russian traveling painters), works of the Classical Modernism (German impressionists and expressionists, New Functionalism) and international art since 1945. Focal points of the graphics collection are graphics of the 16th and 17th century, German watercolours and drawings of the 19th century as well as expressionist works and art after 1945.
The reference library and at least 10 changing exhibitions throughout the year supplement the permanent exhibition.
