Rendsburg Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum in Rendsburg was one of the first Jewish museums to be founded in Germany after the Second World War. Started in 1988 as the Rendsburg City Museum, today we emphasise our state-wide claim and educational mission as part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation Schloss Gottorf.
Pupils from the Heide-Ost grammar school's history club worked on the permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum in Rendsburg.

The museum is located in the former community centre of the Rendsburg Jewish community. It includes the Talmud Torah School from 1830 and the only originally preserved synagogue in Schleswig-Holstein. It was built in 1844/45 - and thus before the time of so-called emancipation, the social and legal equality of Jews. This is why the building blends into the street quite inconspicuously. The practice of religion was permitted at the time, but it should be as inconspicuous as possible.

The Jewish Museum in Rendsburg is the central place of learning about the Jewish present and history. Jews, their self-image and their positions today and in the past become visible. One focus is on the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era. Another is recognising today's forms of anti-Semitism and taking a stand. We show that we are part of a supra-regional network against anti-Semitism. We provide information material on various topics for teachers and other visitors.
