Description
The house where Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) was born was handed over to the “Barlach-Gesellschaft” (Barlach Society) in 1987. It is run as a cultural centre. In addition, it is signifies an acknowledgement of artists who were ostracized by the National Socialists. The establishment in Wedel is dedicated to the life and work of Barlach like other museums in Ratzeburg, Hamburg and Güstrow. The exhibition in Wedel concentrates on graphics and literature. There is also an extensive photo archive. Altogether about 20 sculptures and almost 100 graphics by Barlach are kept and exhibited. Ernst Barlach’s birthplace was opened as the Ernst Barlach Museum in August 1987 after extensive renovations. Thanks to the acquisition of considerable estates and permanent loans, the house now has a representative collection of Barlach’s sculptures, drawings, woodcuts, lithographies, letters, and manuscripts.
