Description
The „Haus Peters“ includes a former grocer’s shop from 1820. This shop makes the museum a very special one because it is still used as a sales room for numerous items. There are also a gallery and changing exhibitions. The “Horst Janssen Zimmer” (Horst Janssen room) in the gable with the “Eiderland-Mappe” (Eiderland folder) and the “Janssenhof” (Janssen farm) as well as the farmer’s garden with its herbaceous perennial plants and its summer flowers are well worth seeing. In the other rooms of the house there are special exhibitions on contemporary art and cultural history.
The historical grocer’s shop with its well restored fittings is probably the oldest rural shop of this kind in Schleswig-Holstein that is still preserved in its original place. The house of the Peters family was built around 1760. Between 1850 and 1955 it was the living section of a former so-called “Haubarg” (from “Heu Bergen” = gather in hay; special type of large farm building). It represents an important historical monument in cultural history that illustrates rural life in the 18th and 19th century. In addition to the original Biedermeier fittings of the grocer’s shop there is a good deal of “Gründerzeit” furniture in the kitchen and living rooms as well. It also derives from the former owners of the house. The visitor has the rare opportunity to experience living and working in the vicinity of the village and its surroundings, which once provided the grocer’s shop with its customers.
