Das Bild entstand anläßlich der Kieler Woche 1984, die unter dem Motto "Frieden erleben, erhalten, gestalten" stand. Es zeigt eine Strandszene vor dem Bug des letzten deutschen U-Bootes vom Typ VII C (U 995) am Fuße des Marine-Ehrenmals in Laboe. Vor dem bedrohlich aufragenden Bug des U-Bootes spielt sich unbekümmertes Strandleben ab. Das U-Boot, Attraktion und Kulisse zugleich, inmitten des Freizeitgetümmels ist Symbol für die Verdrängung. Die rückverweisende Bedeutung des U-Bootes wird nicht mehr wahrgenommen. Nach Jost Nolte verstand Duwe die Szene "als malerisches Festhalten fortwährender Anwesenheit des Krieges in unserem Alltagsleben und als Lehrstück aus einer gefährlichen Vergangenheit für heute und morgen".
