Das alte Rathaus wurde 1716-1720 von dem Altonaer Stadtbaumeister Claus Stallknecht zwischen dem Nobistor und der Hauptkirche St. Trinitatis-Kirche in der Königstraße erbaut. Ab 1898 verlor es an Bedeutung und diente bis zur Zerstörung 1943 als eines der beiden Altonaer Standesämter und vor allem als Stadtarchiv.
