Der PC Convertible ist der erste IBM-Laptop und tritt die Nachfolge des Portable PC an. Er läuft mit dem Intel-Chip 80C88, einem Verwandten des Intel 8088 aus dem IBM PC. Zum Arbeitsspeicher von 256 Kilobyte kommen zwei Diskettenlaufwerke im neuen 3,5-Zoll-Format; der Monitor zeigt 25 Zeilen mit in der Höhe komprimierten Zeichen an. Das Styling des Laptops entwirft der preisgekrönte deutsche Designer Richard Sapper, was den Misserfolg der PC Convertible aber nicht verhindern kann.
