Die Pumpen der Melkmaschine, die die nötige Saugluft erzeugen, sind sehr verschieden ausgeführt. Diese Vakuum-Pumpen werden als Kolben-und als Rundlaufpumpen ausgebildet und können (je nach örtlichen Verhältnissen) durch einen Elektro-Motor oder durch ein Verbrennungsmotor betrieben werden. Der Verbrennungsmotor wird meistens bei transportablen Anlagen für den Weidemelkbetrieb erforderlich.
