The „Hebbel-Museum“ in Wesselburen deals with the life and work of the poet Hebbel. He was born in Wesselburen in 1813 and died in Wien in 1863. Ten historical rooms present furniture, household items, pictures and documents, which illustrate the simple living conditions of Friedrich Hebbel: Hunger and work determined the first 32 years of his life. He got prosperity and acknowledgement only in Wien where he lived together with the Burg actress Christine Enghaus. They married in 1846. This period is represented by the “Wiener Zimmer” (Wien room) which shows the raised life style of the poet from Schleswig-Holstein. A research institution of the “Hebbel-Gesellschaft” (Hebbel Society) and an extensive library adjoin the museum.
